What Are Calories?

If you simply try to eat healthy all the time, or if you are wanting to lose weight, you surely have at least a basic knowledge of calories; and of course, by “basic knowledge,” this means you know you need to burn calories to lose weight, and you need to eat fewer calories to keep weight off! But if you do not possess a complete understanding of calories, you will not be able to effectively manage your eating habits based on the calories you are putting into your body.

What many people fail to realize about calories – especially those people who do everything they can to eat fewer calories – is that your body derives energy from calories. There is a good chance you have noticed that the “nutrition facts” for food lists the “daily percentage values,” and then mentions that this is based on a 2,000 calorie diet. What this breaks down to mean is that - for people whose bodies require 2,000 calories per day – this is the daily percentage of each listed item their body needs. But this also means that everyone “needs” a certain number of calories each day, and it also means that some people need more calories than other people need.

Check out The Negative Calorie Diet!

Every person has what is called a “basal metabolic rate,” which is the number of calories that person needs in order for their body to perform its basic tasks, such as breathing, pumping blood, staying healthy, and so on. On top of this, there are calories your body needs for “work” activity – that is, activities that go over and above your body’s basic needs, such as walking or driving your car or playing sports or playing with your kids!

Lots of people go on “crash diets” and wonder why they feel so much more tired than they felt before, but one reason is because they are not getting enough calories into their body. Rather than taking all the time and effort to “count calories,” you should find out which foods have good calories and which have bad; if you eat the healthy foods, you can get the calories you need for energy, and you can still keep off those pesky pounds!

Perfect Skincare (for normal to dry skin types)

Skincare can be a mystifing world, but fret not — here are some great tips revealed. For normal to dry skin that is blemish prone, but not plagued by acne, the perfect combination of inexpensive products exists. Start your new regime with a morning/shower cleanser. Aveeno Clear Complexion Cleanser is the perfect creamy exfoliating wash that your skin type needs. It’s simple and clean, made of all natural ingredients that clean and nurture your skin. It’s a great way to start your day; it will give you a clean beginning, and it treats your skin to fight blemishes all day. It has only a two percent content of salicylic acid, which is a mild but effective way to keep blemishes away. You should follow the cleanser with its matching Aveeno Clear Complexion Lotion. It comes in a convenient pump bottle that works just like standard hand soaps.

Just be careful not to use too much because if you do, the lotion will start to get chunky as you try to rub the excess in. The lotion has the same low percentage of salicylic acid as the cleanser so it is able to keep your skin clear all day. When your skin still has the occasional blemish that is hard to get rid of, use
Neutrogena On the Spot Acne Treatment to easily zap your zits. It leaves the skin soft, but clears zits fast. The treatment is inexpensive and a little bit goes quite a long way so you won’t need to replace it often. When you need to clean your skin at night, there is an easy and supremely effective combination of cleaners to use. Oily eye makeup removers leave your eyes feeling gross, so an oil-free alternative is Rimmel Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. It works spectacularly well on all kinds of eye makeup including waterproof mascara, eye shadow, and eyeliners. To finish off the day, swipe a cotton ball full of thee cool, refreshing SeaBreeze FreshClean Astringent all over your face to remove every trace of dirt, makeup, and oil. You’ll be able to see the results, so continue until you come back with a clean cotton ball. Your skin can sleep well, and repeat in the morning!

How to Use Essential Oils Safely

Essential oils are great to use in aromatherapy and for massage therapy but it is incredibly important to use safe practices when using them. Essential oils are extremely concentrated natural chemicals and compounds and just like any other chemical can be dangerous. I personally err on the side of caution when it comes to the use of essential oils.  There are some people who are more liberal then I am willing to be.

I never use essential oils undiluted. Some people say lavender and tea tree oils are ok to use undiluted but I personally wouldn’t risk it. You can build up an allergic reaction to these to safe essential oils if they are use undiluted. Having to suffer with itchy and painful hives are not fun it is better just do dilute the oils.

When essential oils are used in massage therapy they are diluted into another carrier oil such as sweet almond, or olive oil.  When used in aromatherapy the oils are placed into a diffuser. Never put essential oils on mucus membranes or take them internally.  Only use them diluted on the skin and only after you do a small spot test to make sure you don’t react. Large doses of concentrated oils can be toxic to your system.

Those who are pregnant and young children should not touch essential oils either. Again you don’t want to risk an allergic reaction. Some essential oils can be dangerous to an unborn child. When we place essential oils onto our skin, it is absorbed into our systems.  Your unborn child can then be exposed to the oils.

Asthma sufferers need to exercise caution also when it comes to essential oils used in aromatherapy. Beware that some oils could trigger an asthma attack.  Different people can react to different oils so there is no specific standard on this. Lavender may be an issue for one person and not for another.

Essential oils are great for aromatherapy. You can find your mood is lifted or you can feel calmed down. Ulimately essential oils can help you a lot but it is necessary to use them safely.

Building A Base Tan

American have become better educated over the last several years as to the risks of skin cancer from overexposure to the sun, but it is also necessary for us to remember that the sun is important and beneficial for our bodies as well, as it provides us with vitamin D. One way to protect yourself from harmful UV rays that will increase your risk to skin cancer is to make sure you consistently apply sunscreen, but this requires you to constantly be aware of whether or not you have on sunscreen. Another method for protecting yourself from getting skin cancer (from harmful UV rays) is by building a base tan, as this will keep your skin safer when you are in the sun, and there are a few easy tips to follow to ensure you are building up this base tan.

In order to build the base tan that will keep you safe in the sun (and in order to keep from putting yourself at heightened risk of skin cancer), you need to make sure you avoid getting burned - which requires you to take a slow, steady approach in your quest to build a base tan. At first, you should only go into the sun for short periods at a time (no more than 20 to 30 minutes of exposure at a time – less if you have fair skin), and during this time, still apply sunscreen!

As your tan starts to build, you can scale back the SPF on the sunscreen you are using, and you can increase the amount of time you are spending in the sun; you will be able to witness your tan growing darker and darker, and the darker your tan becomes, the safer you will be going out in the sun!

No matter how thick your base tan is, you should still apply sunscreen when you are going to be spending a significant amount of time out in the sun, but you can use a lower SPF if you already have a good base tan in place, and in this way, the tan will continue to darken!

Should You Take Vitamin E Supplements?

It was popular to take vitamin E supplements, but the excitement about this vitamin has diminshed over time. What do the latest studies on vitamin E say?

Why do you need vitamin E? Vitamin E is credited with healthy nervous system and muscle support. It also prevents oxidation, a little-discussed but quite destructive chemical reaction related to having too little vitamin E. For a long time, doctors were recommending vitamin E as an antioxidant, but most recent findings suggest that vitamin E supplements do not actually provide antioxidant boosts in humans. Unfortunately, vitamin E supplements may hurt you more than they help, if taken in large doses.

What’s the best way to get your recommended amount of vitamin E? Natural sources of vitamin E are eggs, meat, vegetable oils, nut oils, nuts, leafy greens, grains and some fruit. Vegans may want to ensure they eat plenty of nuts and nut oils, plus leafy greens and vegetable oils, just to make sure they’re getting enough vitamin E naturally.

How much vitamin E do you need in a day? You should keep your vitamin E intake to between 22 IU (International Units) and 400 IU. This is a deviation from the past suggestions to take megadoses, which are suspected to result in serious health problems.

Will you benefit from vitamin E supplements? Don’t take vitamin E supplements unless your doctor approves and gives you concrete reasons behind taking them. Studies suggest our bodies handle natural sources of vitamin E better than vitamin E supplements, so you’ll want to aim to eat your daily amount instead of popping a pill. If you’ve got vitamin E oil capsules sitting around, you can use vitamin E oil topically to deal with skin conditions and promote faster healing of wounds. It’s best to get your vitamin E internally by eating a diet rich in vitamin E and taking a reputed multivitamin, but foregoing the megadose supplements.

Tips For Staying Safe While Rock Climbing

If you are wanting to use the nice weather as an opportunity to stay healthy and have fun, one of the best things you can do is go rock climbing, as rock climbing with strengthen everything from your feet to your fingers to your arms, legs, and back, all while allowing you to do something that is plenty of fun. But even though rock climbing can be a lot of fun, it can also be dangerous if you do not take the proper precautions, and rather than trying to learn through trial and error (which can be marvelously painful!), you should take the time to learn what you need to do in order to stay safe while rock climbing.

A lot of people think that there is no need for them to have a crash pad underneath them, as they assume it will not do much, or that they are not going to fall from high enough up for it to matter – but before you go rock climbing, realize that crash pads are not just some ploy to make money; they are truly important to have!

Every time you go rock climbing, you should also have a spotter; in addition to being able to keep you safe, a spotter will also be there in case something happens to you, as you will certainly not want to sustain a serious injury when you are out there all alone.

And finally, realize that you will be more likely to start taking things for granted when you have been climbing for a long time; even though you might start to become comfortable with rock climbing in general, and with the routes you usually do specifically, you should make sure you are always remaining careful as you climb, testing every rock, and never climbing so fast that you could cause yourself trouble.

You should not have a hard time staying safe while rock climbing, as long as you make sure you head out there with a crash pad underneath you, a spotter to keep you safe, and a head for caution.

The Importance of Recognizing the Signs of a Heart Attack

Being able to recognize the symptoms of a heart attack can not only save your life, but it can save the life of someone else. There is a window of opportunity that someone who suffers a heart attack has to minimize the damage to their system and have the best chances of having minimal damage.

When people think about having a heart attack they imagine that it is like you see on TV. We relate actors grasping their chests in sudden intense pain. If you see someone exhibiting this behavior, get a phone and call 911 immediately. But what if the symptoms are a bit different then this would you know what to do?

What happens if the person complains of pain that is coming and going? Believe it or not this can happen in a heart attack. Some people experience pain that comes and goes.  The feeling is sometimes very intense in the center of the chest. The pain can be in other places too including the neck, one or both arms, and the jaw.  Some people also complain of shortness of breath and feeling sick to their stomach. Cold and clammy skin can also go along with heart attacks.

So what should you do if you or someone you know begins showing some or all of these signs? First and foremost call 911 immediately. Ask if the person suffering from an attack is taking any medications such as nitroglycerine. If you have an asprin available you can provde it to them if they are not allergic. Asprin should be chewed to get it into the blood stream the fastest.

CPR may become necessary if the person stops breathing. This alone is a great reason to take a first aid course from the Red Cross. Quick thinking and knowledge can save your or someone else’s life some day. Knowing the symptoms of heart issues is well worth knowing!

Finding Sweets That Are Not Quite So Unhealthy

There are plenty of people who try to make it sound like eating healthy is the easiest thing in the world, but if you have a serious sweet tooth, it can be a whole lot more difficult for you to keep cravings from bringing down your diet. While you will undoubtedly need a certain amount of will power in order to be able to stick to the eating plan you have chosen, it can also help when you know certain foods to eat that are both healthy and beneficial; if you have a sweet tooth, one of the things that will particularly help you is knowing some “sweets” that are really not that unhealthy.

Dark chocolate: Too much dark chocolate is not good for you (as is the case with any food!), but when you eat dark chocolate in moderation, not only is it “not bad” for you, but it actually is an antioxidant, which means that it will help your body to chase away disease.

Honey: While most sweets have a tendency to make you tired later in the day – giving you one of those sugar crashes everyone dreads – honey not only avoids the sugar crash, but it also gives you natural energy; using honey as a sweetener is a great way for you to get some extra energy from your food while also boosting the taste.

Fruit: When fruit starts making its way onto your dessert plate, it can be difficult at first, but once you get used to having fruit after dinner, you will begin to find that this is actually a great way to get something sweet while also staying healthy; when you are first getting used to this, try adding a little bit of sugar to your fruit, then quickly wean yourself down to fruit alone!

No matter what you do, “eating healthy” will be a chore if you have a major sweet tooth – but when you try adding these things to your eating habits, things will become a little bit easier!

Finding Foods to Eat When You Have Morning Sickness

Sometimes when you are in the early part of pregnancy eating any type of food can be torture. There are some foods that can be easy on the stomach and healthy for you at the same time. Here are are a few suggestions that may help you find some foods that will work for you.

Queasy stomaches sometimes do well with fresh fruits. Try oranges and strawberries, although they are acidic some people don’t have problems with them. High in foliate and vitamin C, it is worth the shot to try to eat oranges and strawberries. Bananas are high in foliate and potassium.  These are both things that pregnant women need very much.

If you are struggling eating beef or chicken, try reaching for a yogert instead. Yogert is not only high in proteins but it also has probiotics in it. Probiotics have been noted to assist in reducing the risk of yeast infections and also assist in your immune system health. Malt-o-meal may be a great hot cerial to try on your stomach. Just getting down a serving of Malt-o-meal will give you good start on your daily requred amount of protein, iron, and foliate.

Lentils are also a mild tasting food to consider. Lentils are high in protein, iron, and fiber, which are all things that a pregnant woman desperately need. Quinoa (a grain like seed) is a great mild option to try also. Like Lentils quinoa is high in protein, iron, and fiber.  This also has a very mild nutty taste that is pleasing to the taste. With just a bit of brown sugar and a hand full of raisins, quinoa can make a very nice hot breakfast.

If you can stomach figs they can be a good source of both iron and fiber. It seems like many people are able to stomach sweeter fruits more easily. Also another quick and easy option is a handful of almonds, or cashews. These are high fiber and have some great omega fatty acids in them.

It is important for a pregnant woman to try her best to heat healthy during all parts of her pregnancy. When nothing is sitting well on your stomach it is hard to eat well. Give some of these foods a try and see what combination may work for you.

Tips For Preventing Insomnia

If you’re reading this at 2 A.M., you’re probably desperate for some help handling your insomnia. You’re not alone; plenty of people struggle with insomnia, and there are ways to prevent it. Check out these simple tips for overcoming insomnia:

Get some exercise (but not too close to your bedtime). Cardio exercise is the most effective at combatting insomnia; it wears you out, drops stress levels, and makes your body release good hormones that will help you sleep.

Make a deliberate effort to let go of any thoughts that are concerning you. If you have a high stress job or life situation, you may want to try releasing your stress each night before you go to bed. Consider writing in a diary, reviewing your plan for the next day to be sure you’ve considered everything, talking to someone, putting out your clothes for the next day, or meditating on the issues that bother you, intentionally letting go of stress.

Follow the same bedtime routine every night. Take time to do proper self care (brush teeth, wash up, etc) and then to do something calming right before bed. Some restful activities are reading, gentle yoga, and breathing exercises, all of which are much more restful than watching TV or playing video games, which will rev you up. Commit to the same bedtime routine so your body and mind both recognize the cues that it’s time to go to sleep.

Insomniacs should try to use the bedroom for sleeping only. Use your living room for active things and your bedroom for sleeping.

Lower the temps in your room. You’ll sleep better if the temps are cool and you’re snuggled up under covers.

Look around for lights that may be keeping you up. The led lights in your room may be what is preventing you from sleeping well. Cover them up or turn them away from you whenever possible.

Dim the lights in your room. Replace high watt bulbs with low watt bulbs, and invest in black out shades in you need to sleep when it’s light out.

Try these tips to handle your insomnia. Get some good sleep now!
